“Miss Dani” and our Children’s Program participants collaborated to create this piece while learning about and experimenting with cyanotypes, a photographic technique that uses the sun to expose prints.
The SBTT Children’s Program provides weekly art education classes to youth ages 6-17 who are enrolled in residential treatment programs at Glenwood, a local organization that SBTT has partnered with over the years that specializes in services for folks with autism and other behavioral health needs. These young students have generally experienced a great deal of trauma in their short lives, and they are in completely new environments with new homes, caregivers, teachers, peers and routines when they come to us. Our studio provides a safe and fun space for free expression, exploration of new ideas, discovery and the nurturing of creative skills. Much of our art making inspiration comes from our Art Garden, a truly unique, immersive learning tool that allows us to incorporate learning standards around the natural sciences and sustainability, history and social studies, and math into our youth art education curriculum. This program aids in our young artists’ progression through their treatment program at Glenwood, teaching them invaluable life skills like commitment, responsibility, collaboration, critical thinking, and delayed gratification. The Art Garden also allows us to produce natural, nontoxic, plant-based inks, paints, dyes, and paper that can be implemented in our children’s and adult programs year around.
