ABOUT THE ARTIST

This piece, like almost all Merrilee Challiss’ mixed media works, is channeled, meaning she began with no plan and just followed intuitive responses until something emerged on the picture plane. She built up the surfaces in layers with thin watercolor washes, building up forms using a little gouache, ink and colored pencil in addition to the watercolor. Two forms emerged – creatures more nyad than human – in ambiguous relationship. Merrilee’s m.o. is to engage the imaginal realms, the liminal space between what is familiar and what is strange…leaving space ultimately for the viewer’s interpretation.
