ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dan Bailey is an artist, writer, musician and photo editor living in Birmingham, Alabama, often working under his nom de plume The Old Bailey. Dan studied painting and drawing at the University of North Texas and the Royal College of Art in London. He was a member of Good/Bad Art Collective in Denton, Texas and Brooklyn, New York. He is currently learning to cast and paint lead toy soldiers using traditional techniques, and is writing a novel set in his favorite city of Venice, Italy.
After studying in London in the 1990s, Dan created a series of works exploring British culture and history, using found vintage hardcover books to create three-dimensional collages . This piece, originally assembled in 1993, was pulled apart and refurbished in 2022, with new collage elements and a lighting feature added. “King Edward The Eighth” is a meditation on power, corruption, family, and love. The eye of Wallis Simpson stares back at the viewer through the peephole when lit. This piece would make an excellent gift for fans of the Netflix series “The Crown” or anyone fascinated with the British Royal Family.
