Songs & Sanctuaries: A Memorial Show for Julia Jones

Julia Jones wore her artistic heart on her sleeve. She shared her talent generously and her enthusiasm openly. Her images are colored by a unique mix of sophistication and accessibility that comes from combining many years of practice, a deep love for the creative process, and a genuine eagerness to share her creativity. Her uncanny ability to interpret an object, landscape, or expression in a series of simple lines or gestural strokes is a testament to both her natural talent and her decades of dedication to artistic practice.

Originally from Atlanta, Julia’s parents were avid art collectors, and this certainly influenced her lifelong love of painting and drawing. But her early life was marked by a family tragedy that left her and her brothers orphaned. Encouraged by a relative who was an artist, her creativity was nurtured throughout her life, and she went on to be formally educated in the arts as a young adult in the early 1970s. Though the exact date is not recorded, Julia joined the Studio By The Tracks community in the 1990s and was a valued member until her death in 2022.

At the Studio, her individual creative voice could be seen in her interpretations of those subjects which brought her joy, such as regal angels, elegant landscapes, peaceful churches, cheerful birds, playful pups, and ecstatic singers. She reveled in the social space of the Studio as well, always quick with an encouraging word, a kind critique, or a thoughtful question. She was a prolific maker and took pride in sharing her work. Her special combination of technical skill, elegant style, and generosity of spirit made her a perennial favorite with collectors, fellow artists, and her Studio community.
