You’re invited to Weaving Day at The Old Bailey Gallery on Sunday, July 21st from 11-3. Over the course of the day, participants will contribute to Bethany Moody’s interactive exhibition, With Give, by processing naturally dyed materials into strips and braiding yarn that will be used as warp on the BFL (Big Friendly Loom), an 8 x 17.5’ jumbo loom installed at the Old Bailey. Participants will learn basic tapestry weaving techniques and will have the opportunity to weave into the BFL or on small-scale tapestry looms, embedding their sense of color and texture within the exhibition.
With Give is an evolving, interactive exhibition that relies on community participation to be fully realized. Over the course of the exhibition, participants will assist in the natural dyeing and processing of yarn, rope, tshirts and bedsheets into strips of material that will then be woven on the BFL (Big Friendly Loom). Hand built by Moody with support from Jason Lake at the University of Alabama, BFL is an eight foot wide jumbo loom whose warp spans the width of The Old Bailey Gallery (17.5 feet). In addition to cooperative dyeing and weaving, several interactive soft sculptures will be available in the gallery for engagement. Through touch, participants will feel their way through making, giving, and being with one another.
